It is said that a good piece of advice goes a along way. While everyone has advice ready for sharing, Gaspar's has years of practical experience behind the tips we offer. The tips we offer here resolve some of the most common questions that our customers ask us. Click a Tip to read our advice:

1. Be prepared to handle common home emergencies

2. A little nurturing now can save you A LOT OF PAIN later

3. Think ahead for the weather

Be prepared to handle common home emergencies. Feeling helpless when an undesirable “surprise” happens can really spoil your day. Below are some common home emergencies and some tips on how to deal with them.

"My basement is flooded!” First, have the water removed asap either by doing it yourself with a wet vac or calling a water removal service.  Second, rent and set up a dehumidifier and fans to dry out the space.  Third, Remove any damaged carpet and pads and make sure there is no furniture resting in the damp flooring to prevent stains.  You can call a 24hr water damage restoration company such as Superior Cleaning and Restoration.  Their website is www.superiorcln.com.

“My toilet is overflowing and won’t stop running!” The first thing you will want to do is shut off the water valve.  This is located behind the bowl and can be either an oblong or round handle.  You might want to get a plumber in there to fix any outstanding problem there may be.  One that we have worked with for years is Good Services and they can be reached at 206-322-3000.

A little nurturing now can save you A LOT OF PAIN later. Most homeowners have felt the sting of neglecting their homes. How would you feel having to spend your vacation money on an expensive rot or water damage repair? Would it feel even worse when you find out it could have been prevented with a less expensive fix or preventative step?

  •  Rot – Rot occurs when water penetrates a crack or wood finish and can’t dry out. Here are some tips to help prevent rot from forming or spreading.
  •  Inspect for peeling paint or other paint failures, especially near joints, such as mitered trim corners at roof eaves or where window and door casings contact sills.
  •  Have cracks sealed with caulk.
  •  Make sure crawl-space vents remain open, especially during the summer, or add vents where there are none.
  •  Check your gutters for leaks.
  •  If you’ve ever seen an area of rot on your home and thought to yourself “I’ll deal with it later” or “It’s not a big deal” Stop Right There! Take care of it now before it does become a big deal in a couple of years.

Think ahead for the weather. We Seattleites are at the mercy of rain for half of the year. This means that our projects and repairs are at the mercy of the seasons as well! If you are one step ahead in your home maintenance planning, you will save yourself the headache of trying to work on your home when all the elements are against you. Plan your projects in advance so you can secure a spot during the spring and summer times when everyone is super busy.
Some examples of things to do in Dry Weather

1. Outside Caulking – Check for areas on the exterior that may be cracked or where the caulk has failed. Most caulks won’t adhere properly to wet surfaces, so it is best to get all caulking during the spring and summer when it is drier.

2. Masonry Repair – Sealants used to protect brick and mortar absorb the best when the surface has been dry. Maximum absorption ensures longer lasting protection.

3. Exterior Pressure Washing, Painting and Touch-ups
